On December 24th, 1968 American astronaut William Anders took this iconic photograph of the Earth aboard Apollo 8 as it orbited the Moon. This image became widely known as earthrise , regarded by wilderness photographer Galen Rowell as "the most influential environmental photograph ever taken."

In 1972 the crew of Apollo 17 captured another widely reproduced picture of the Earth taken from a distance of 28,000 miles known as The Blue Marble.

In 2001, the BBC broadcast The Blue Planet , a television documentary series narrated by Richard Attenborough presenting a comprehensive natural history of the world’s oceans, followed in 2006 by his series Planet Earth.
